Summary

Metro is extending light rail service from the Redondo Beach (Marine) Station to the Torrance Transit Center, adding 4.7 miles of new track and two new stations. By providing a fast, frequent and reliable transit option to the South Bay, the Project will improve environmental and economic outcomes across LA County. On January 22, 2026, the Metro Board of Directors certified the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) and approved the K Line Extension to Torrance Project with the Hawthorne Option as the project alignment. Starting mid-October, you might notice crews on Hawthorne Bl conducting field investigation work to support ongoing engineering and design efforts.

What

Metro's contractor will perform geotechnical and potholing investigation, and survey work to confirm existing field conditions. Field investigations may include land surveying, identifying utilities within the Project area, taking soil samples and measurements to understand conditions beneath the ground surface through potholing (or drilling small holes), traffic and roadway assessments, and other site evaluations. Most activities will be temporary and localized.

Where/When

Survey and geotechnical investigation is anticipated to start October 19, 2026 followed by potholing activities for an approximate duration of 6-months. Work hours are 7:30AM to 6:00PM Monday - Friday.
