River Channels: Field Investigations

Summary 
As part of the field investigations for the Southeast Gateway Line, Metro’s contractors will perform field exploratory work that includes drilling and soil sampling in the San Gabriel River, Rio Hondo River and the Los Angeles River. This work is scheduled to be performed this summer, May through July 2026.  This work will help advance the preliminary design effort for Southeast Gateway Line construction project. 

Schedule: May 11 to July 31, 2026  

Work Hours: 7am – 6pm, Monday through Friday (pending weather and river conditions) 

Locations: 
  • San Gabriel River channel in Cerritos from Monday, May 11 to Friday, July 31 
  • Rio Hondo River channel in South Gate from Monday, May 18 to Friday, July 31 
  • Los Angeles River channel in South Gate from Monday, June 25 to Friday, July 31
What to Expect 
  • Surface conditions will be restored in concrete channels after drilling is completed.  
  • Flaggers will be present as necessary to support passage of vehicles across public pathways (bike trails).
Noteworthy 
  • All work has received necessary permits and approvals.  
  • Access to emergency responders will be maintained.  
  • Construction is a dynamic process and work schedules and timelines are subject to change.
