Metro/BNSF Railroad Track Property from 190th St to Crenshaw: Field Investigation Work

Summary: Metro is extending light rail service from the existing Redondo Beach (Marine) Station to the Torrance Transit Center, adding 4.7 miles of new track and two new stations. In January 22, 2026, the Metro Board of Directors certified the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and approved the K Line Extension to Torrance Project, with the Hawthorne Option as the Project alignment.

Starting this summer, you might notice crews conducting field investigation work to support ongoing engineering and design efforts. They will be surveying the land and checking soil conditions to help us design the project safely and accurately.

What & Where: Metro’s contractor will perform geotechnical and potholing investigation, and survey work to confirm existing field conditions on Metro/BNSF right-of-way, along the railroad tracks, South of 190th St to Crenshaw Bl. A work staging site will be set up at the south side of the Redondo Beach Station to support field activities.

When: Investigation work is anticipated to start as early as July 20, 2026 and continue for approximately two months. Work hours are from 7am to 6pm Monday – Friday. Additional investigation work along Hawthorne Bl will be scheduled at a later time. A separate notice will be issued.

What to Expect: Work will be contained within the Metro/BNSF right-of-way. There will be no impact to private properties or public roadways.
