Underpass Demolition and Reconstruction at Main St, San Pedro St, Avalon Bl, and Stanford Av

Summary: Metro has a plan to ease traffic and enhance safety on the I-105, which includes the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, or carpool lane, into two Metro ExpressLanes in each direction on the I-105. Major construction for the first phase of the project, Segment 1 between Sepulveda Bl and Central Av, started in early 2025 is anticipated for a duration of approximately three years.

As part of these improvements, crews have begun to demolish and reconstruct several underpasses along the corridor roadway pavement construction for the new ExpressLanes on the freeway.

Location: I-105 over Main St, San Pedro St, Avalon Bl, and Stanford Av

Anticipated Construction Timeline: Schedule is subject to change.

  • Construction at all locations began in May and is anticipated to be complete by summer 2026.

  • Mostly daytime work (6:30am to 4pm) is anticipated at the underpass locations and will include demolition of existing freeway bridge barriers, excavation, pile driving, bridge foundation and structure work activities.

  • Intermittent nighttime work (7pm to 6am) will also be required to perform certain work activities. Occasional nighttime full streets closures will take place under these underpasses for certain overhead construction and bridge demolition, drilling, and bridge support installation and removal.

What to Expect:

  • Traffic reconfiguration will be implemented on the streets sat these bridge locations, which entails lane shifts and adjustments to lane widths.
  • Occasional nighttime full street closures will take place under these bridges for certain work activities.

  • Occasional sidewalk closures at these bridges may be necessary, pedestrians will be alerted with advance signage and safely rerouted. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction.
  • Crews will access the work zones from the freeway, local streets, and areas behind k-rail (concrete barriers).

Noteworthy:

  • Work activity is subject to change based on weather conditions.
  • Construction is dynamic and schedules are subject to change.
