West LA VA Hospital Campus Worksite Activities

Summary

Metro contractors will continue construction activities for the future Westwood/VA Hospital Station in the West of Bonsall Av staging yard, and the parking structure in Lot 527. Work includes dewatering well installation, monitoring, utility relocation (storm drain, electricity, gas line, and sewer capping), excavation, hauling of materials, bracing installation, lagging, and installation of station ventilation.

VA Waterline Work

VA Waterline Work: The work continues through this year—the city of LA right-of-way area west of Federal Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard at Wilshire Boulevard. The work requires lane reductions throughout the construction zone along Wilshire Blvd between Barry Ave and Federal Ave/San Vicente Blvd. The traffic control plans will minimize traffic congestion and impact local communities.

The team continues working on Stages 2, 6, 7 and 8, Monday through Sunday, from 9 pm to 6 am, with Stage 3 starting the week of April 7, 2025 from 9 pm to 6 am.

Stage 2: Closures of the #1 and 2 lanes of westbound Wilshire Bl between San Vicente Bl and Barry Av as well as a turn pocket from northbound Wilshire Bl onto San Vicente Bl.

Stage 3 :Closures of #2, 3, 4 lanes of eastbound Wilshire Bl between Barry Av and Federal Av as well as a full closure of Barry Av at Wilshire Bl.

Stage 6: Closures of #1, 2, and 3 lanes of northbound Federal Av at Wilshire Bl, #3 lane of southbound San Vicente Av south of Wilshire Bl, and #1 lane of southbound Federal Av at Wilshire Bl.

Stage 7: Closures of #1 lane of southbound Federal Av at Wilshire Bl, #3 lane of southbound San Vicente Bl south of Wilshire Bl, and southbound right turn line from Wilshire Bl at Federal Av.

Stage 8: Closures of #2 lane of southbound Federal Av at Wilshire Bl, #4 lane of southbound San Vicente Bl south of Wilshire Bl, and right turn lane of southbound Wilshire Bl onto Federal Av.

North Plaza and Pedestrian Bridge:

Metro contractors plan to remove a small portion of the National Veterans Mural. More than 90 percent of the existing mural will remain intact. There is some anticipated noise associated with the work, such as excavation, saw-cutting, jackhammering, piling driving, hauling of materials, and other equipment and techniques that will be used during the construction of these station elements. The work for this area is anticipated to take approximately one-and-a-half (1.5) years.

  • The temporary traffic control that will be implemented will impact the eastbound and westbound Wilshire Bl on-ramps into and out of the VA Campus. In addition, the bus stops on Wilshire Bl will be temporarily relocated for the construction period for this activity. The bus detours on the westbound and eastbound Wilshire Bl were implemented. The impacts on the bus stops will be provided weekly. Bonsall Av for northbound traffic will be restricted, but flaggers will maintain access in both directions.

  • Work is scheduled and will impact the South Campus on-ramp to eastbound Wilshire Bl. The detour also includes a bus stop on the southeast corner of Bonsall Av next to Lot 42 at the VA Campus. A closure will be implemented to affect eastbound Wilshire Bl, where the bus line is located. Day work is expected next week on the north side of campus for SOE lagging and demolition.

  • The work requires lane reductions throughout the construction zone along Wilshire Bl and Federal Av/San Vicente Bl. Two temporary traffic control plans will be implemented to minimize traffic congestion and impacts on the local communities. Street parking may be impacted. Notices will be posted and updated online.

  • Lot 527/ Lot 43/ Parking Structure:

The pre-existing VA Parking Lot 3 has been demolished and currently excavation operations are in progress. Upcoming activities include utility relocations and installation of foundations for the parking structure.

Work Hours: Monday through Saturday, 7am to 4pm

Traffic Controls:

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Bonsall Av and Dowlen Dr.

  • Hadley Ln will be restricted from Bonsall Av for the duration of the project. Hadley Ln access will remain open from Dowlen Dr.

  • Flaggers will maintain traffic safety as needed.

  • Temporary traffic restrictions on VA campus may be required while construction personnel and equipment enter and exit the work areas.

  • Access will be maintained from the south VA gate at Sawtelle Bl and Ohio Av.
